Early jet engines suffered from low thrust, resulting in long B-47 take-off distances. The early B-47s were equipped with mounting brackets for 18 (nine on each side of the fuselage) jet-assisted take-off bottles, essentially small, solid-propellant rocket engines, to decrease take-off distance requirements.
