Bell Aerosystems originally had the contract to produce the entire Ascent Propulsion System engine, but encountered difficulties with combustion instability. In July 1967, NASA awarded Rocketdyne a contract to provide a stable backup injector system, engine qualification, and engine final assembly. Bell continued to provide the thrust chamber for the engine.
