Overall view of the Apollo 11 hand casts display.

The sign at the base of the display reads

The Perfect Fit

Protecting the Most Delicate Tools

These hand casts ensured that the custom space gloves of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins fit properly. Dexterity in a thick, pressurized space suit glove is challenging. If the gloves are too large, the astronauts have difficulty sensing when their fingertips touch an object. If the gloves are too small, the gloves will press painfully against the fingers and cause the astronaut to lose fingernails. Casts of the astronauts' hands were made to build the custom gloves. Because Collins wore his wedding ring when the cast was made, he had to wear it during the mission.

The sign also has a photo of an X-ray of an Apollo Lunar glove.
