In what I thought was a nice touch, the P-51 was resting on Marston mat, perforated steel planks, or simply "PSP". Rigid yet light-weight, Marston mat allowed the construction battalions to quickly build functional airfields. Bomb damage to the resulting runways could be easily repaired. Interestingly enough, companies are still selling Marston mats today. Picture 2 of 2. View straight down on a Marston mat joint. | ||||
