A corner bookshelf containing a number of awards. At top is the 1958 Dr. Robert H. Goddard Trophy. This trophy is presented annually by the National Space Club to an individual or group who made the largest impact on space activities in the preceding year, although the text on the plaque, containing the specific citation, is too small to read. The polar bear is an award from some German organization. While much of the text on the plaque is illegible, it reads in part "Wernher Freiherr von Braun, zur Erinnerung an die Ehrung seiner wissenschaft Ihren Leistung in Berlin (Baron Wernher von Braun, to commemorate your scientific achievement in Berlin)" and is dated either 2 Januar (January 2) 1959 or 1969. Partially obscured by the arm of the chair is a personal award, with the plaque reading "To Dr. Wernher von Braun: The wood is Gopherwood, from which Noah's Ark was built. The rare wood is found on the east bank of the Apalachicola River in N.W. Florida. Jose L. Gonzalez & Grady F. Williams (Ret.), Kennedy Space Center." | ||||
