Explorer I Launch Console

A console used during the launch of Explorer I, the United States' first satellite in orbit. The satellite was launched from Launch Complex 26 at Cape Canaveral.

The sign accompanying the console reads

This is the actual console used to launch the Explorer I atop the Jupiter-C on January 31, 1958. The success of launches such as this required hundreds of people. Explorer I remained in orbit around the Earth until 1970, more than 12 years after it was launched.

Vanguard I, the first U.S. satellite launch attempt which failed in a spectacular fashion, was eventually launched successfully about a month and a half after Explorer I and remains in orbit today (although it has been inoperative since May 1964).

The launch console was previously located just outside Space Hall, with a pin light above it, causing hot spots and apparently causing difficulties with the auto white balance feature of cameras.

The launch console was subsequently moved to the Davidson Center.
