An informational panel above the launch console. It reads

1958

The launch and orbit of Explorer 1 was an impressive technological feat for its time. Without the benefit of computers, NASA engineers calculated launch and orbit equations using slide rules and mechanical calculators, then created the launch event on this timing chart by hand. This console for controlling rocket engine ignition for launch and staging was manually operated.
