LES Pitch Motor

The USSRC exhibits an Apollo Launch Escape Tower pitch control motor. While the main launch escape motor would have pulled the Command Module forward off of the failing launch vehicle, the pitch control motor would have been used under low-altitude abort conditions to push the CM out of the path of the launch vehicle.

Manufactured by the Lockheed Propulsion Company, the motor was 22" long, 8.8 inches in diameter, and 50 pounds in weight, and produced 2,400 lbs of thrust for half a second.
