While both Boeing and SpaceX were selected to provide commercial crew
transportation to the ISS, NASA allowed each company to choose how to fulfill
program requirements, leading both companies to develop their own, incompatible
suits. During the Boeing crew flight test, it became necessary to leave the
crew on the ISS due to concerns with the safety of the Starliner on which the
astronauts arrived and instead return them on a Dragon spacecraft. Since the
suits weren't compatible, it was necessary to send up SpaceX suits for the
stranded Starliner crew members.
