View of the Lunar Sample Shell Core Holder.

I am unclear on what, exactly, this Core Holder was used for. Based on the Catalog of Apollo Lunar Surface Geological Sampling Tools and Containers on page 10 and following, I'm left with the impression that two of these (each of these holders comprised 180°, or half a cylinder) were used to hold the actual core tubes. (The core tubes were apparently designed to be opened only in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory, so these holders were presumably not designed to hold the actual sampled core.)
