Here's a good shot of how the larger hydraulic rams work: The cylinders extend out the bottom (looks like it's enough for two sets of "Jenga block" jacks). Then they retract the cylinders (so the stage rests on the base of the rams), place additional hardwood jacks under the cylinder, and repeat the whole process.
