dsc77475.jpg

Walk-around of the Loon's nose propeller.

Picture 3 of 3.

Part of the guidance system, the air stream would turn the propeller as the Loon flew, operating a mechanism which counted the number of propeller rotations. Once the counter hit the number of rotations programmed by the launching crew—and therefore had flown the desired range—the auto-pilot would send the missile into a steep dive toward its target.

The tag on the left propeller blade reads

Air Log
[unintelligible] No.         Serial No.
[unintelligible]         324
Ord. No. W 33-038 AC 44-2
Mfrs. assy. dwg. No. JH 8510

The stencil on the right propeller blade reads

31-4 counts per mile
67-28
