B-47

Hidden away in a back corner of Hangar A is a B-47E (SN 52-1412). The B-47 is interesting in that it was the first mass-produced swept-wing jet bomber; it looked more like an over-sized fighter aircraft than a bomber.

Those early jet engines were somewhat under-powered, leading the Air Force to experiment with jet-assisted take-off, which were basically a number of solid-propellant rockets which were strapped to the plane's fuselage. This led to some dramatic take-offs.

The B-47 Stratojet Association has an extensive Website, with photos, information on B-47 versions, stories from B-47 crewmen, and much more.

As of now, I have not yet sorted through all of my pictures of the B-47, but some other page references this location. Thus, this is a "place holder" version right now, with only the pictures actually referenced. Come back some time later to see if I've finished up, or drop me an email to request me to prioritize the rest of these pictures.
