B-1A

The B-1A Lancer is the earlier model of the B-1B strategic bomber currently in service. Although the plane's official moniker is the "Lancer", I understand that many refer to it as the "Bone", supposedly coming from an early newspaper article were the reporter inadvertently left the dash out of "B-One".

Only four B-1As were manufactured. Two crashed, leaving only two to be retired and subsequently put on display.

Although it appears to have been removed from the museum's web site, the Wayback Machine still has has a page documenting this plane's restoration. One of the museum staff told me that, with the removal of the various equipment, they needed to add ballast to the nose of the plane to keep its nose gear on the ground.
