Titan II Mark 6 Reentry Vehicle

The museum displays a Mark 6 reentry vehicle near the forward end of their Titan II.

Although I had never seen such a reentry vehicle before (other than atop the Titan II at the Air Force Museum), this particular trip would hold three reentry vehicles: One at the Strategic Air & Space Museum (which we had recently visited) and one at the 8th Air Force Museum. As such, I concentrated more on the Space Race artifacts, and thus have only a small number of pictures of this particular reentry vehicle.

The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission's Advanced Reentry Vehicles page has a bit of information on the development of reentry vehicles for ICBMs, including a bit on the Mark 6. Apparently, the "phenolic nylon (a nylon cloth impregnated with resin)" nose cap was about two inches thick, while the "special plastic" on the rest of the vehicle was only about 1/4 inch thick.
