The stenciling reads "50 drops," presumably referring to parachute drop tests. There are 42 black drop markings, plus 8 orange-red ones. Several of the red ones have extra markings drawn through the parachute/spacecraft combination (a couple look like lightning bolts); I would guess that these indicate tests which didn't go as planned?
