Note the small latches (variously also called engagement pins or locking dogs) around the periphery of the neck ring interior, in their engaged position. The latches are spring-loaded and have a bevel tip. They slide out of the way as the helmet is lowered into place and, once the helmet is seated, snap out into the channel to hold the helmet in place.
