This redoubtable division equipped with self-propelled assault guns under Grup. Ostendorff, who was to be killed on June 16, was the only SS division with 2nd Panzer SS (Das Reich) to fight in the American sector. The first contact took place June 13 south of Carentan with elements of the 2nd U.S. Armored Division which landed on Omaha June 9.
