ALSEP Central Station
An Apollo Lunar
Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) was deployed by all 6 Apollo missions
that landed on the Moon.
While specific experiments changed with each mission, the Central Station was
common to all.
It assembled data from the other ALSEP experiments, transmitted it back to
Earth, and also allowed Earth-based controllers to fine-tune or activate
individual experiments when desired.
The Central Station was further used to evaluate the effects of lunar dust,
solar wind, and thermal changes on instrument components.
The preproduction model displayed here was used by NASA to evaluate its design.
