Building 4200

Building 4200 is the Marshall Space Flight Center Headquarters Building. Upon the building's completion in July 1963, Wernher von Braun made his office on the ninth floor of this building. Additional information about this building can be found on Marshall's History Site.

The VIPs certainly get a nice rocket engine display, with an F-1, J-2, and Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). Alan Lawrie tells me that the F-1, at least, has been on display since the 1990s but that the engines underwent a refurbishment concluding in May 2008 when they were placed at their current position [direct link to 1.2 meg PDF]. For a time, the Google Maps coverage showed the engines farther from Bldg. 4200, right along Rideout Road, presumably from prior to the refurbishment, although I see that Google has updated their satellite imagery since I initially created this page.

Historically, the HQ building has had an even nicer lawn ornament display, even if only for a short time: Space Shuttle Enterprise meandered its way down the road in front of Bldg. 4200 on its way to the dynamic test stand in 1978.
