Overall walk-around of the F-1 rocket engine. Picture 2 of 6. I'm uncertain what's covering the engine. The brown goo may be some sort of preservative, or it may be the accumulation of some 40 years of grime. However, the streaks in the goo do appear to match those on F-4023 when it was ice blasted, so I consider it very likely that this is F-4023. I consider it likely that the white bags tied to the thermal insulation studs is desiccant, although it certainly seems unlikely to provide any benefit in the engine's current environment. I wonder if the engine was previously wrapped in plastic, where the desiccant packets would be more effective. | ||||||
