Note that the scoop and extension handle both have large retainers built into the carrier, but the soil sampler and tongs have low, V-shaped clip retainer bracket slots (flanking the scoop's holder) and their long handles were secured by the retention bar running from center of the carrier to the right. The retention bar opened at right (hinging at the center of the carrier) to allow the tools to be removed.

At upper right and and lower right, note the darker hinge halves which attached the hand tool carrier to the LRV aft pallet.
