Ground crews carried a tool called an "emergency wrench" or an "Apollo hatch tool." This is essentially a modified, 7/16" Allen wrench, which can be used to open the hatch from the outside.

The hatch would have had instructive decals to provide recovery forces with a reminder as how to open the hatch.
