Note the silver battery compartment near the glove's thumb. The gloves were equipped with fingertip lights (held in place by the dark grey fabric, just barely visible as shiny spots on the back of the fingertips, and lit up in this pre-launch photo), to help illuminate the control panel as the astronaut had to flip switches.
