Mark 27 Torpedo

The Mk 27 Mod 4 torpedo is located in the waiting area for the USS Cobia tours.

The Mod 4 was a refinement of the Mk 27 Mod 0, which in turn was an adaptation of the Mine Mk 24. The mine was 19" in diameter but submarine torpedo tubes were 21" in diameter, so the torpedoes were fitted with wood guides ("skegs") on the outer cylindrical shell.

The USS Cod, another Gato-class museum ship, has put out a video regarding the Mark 27 torpedo and its various iterations.
