All of the A6L designs which I've seen featured a rear entry zipper, extending from the top of the boot to below the top of the sole; the top of the sole incorporated a U-shaped cut-out for the zipper. It is my understanding that, after the molds for the final A6L sole design were created, they were simply modified to omit the cut-out and the same molds were used for the A7L boots.

A long webbing loop, anchored at the bottom of the heel, was included to help the astronaut pull the boot on.
