The Redstone aft unit has another instrument compartment located 180° from the easily accessible door. This door is up against the back wall, limiting the degree to which the door can be opened and limiting photos to hand-held, flash shots. This compartment held the ST-80 stabilized platform, the gyroscopic inertial measurement unit which provided the missile with a space-fixed frame of reference, tracking the payload's progress as it flew to its target. The bulk of this compartment appears to be the frame which held the ST-80. Picture 3 of 3. | ||||
