View of the top face of the LOX dome. This LOX dome has the remains of a gimbal bearing (the brown, cupped portion is part of the bearing's "fabroid liner"), most of which has been torn off. Note the gimbal bearing bolt at the 3:00 position, which has also been sheared off. The bearing's fabroid liner was composed of Teflon-impregnated fiberglass and was bonded to the bearing surfaces of the bearing socket. It was lubricated at assembly and required no further lubrication. According to a modern bearing vendor,, fabroid liners are designed to carry higher loads with improved wear life. The liner is highly compressible and able to absorb distortions in mating surfaces, and provides a low fiction surface. It also appears that the LOX dome has a full set of dome sealing plugs | ||||
