H-1 Engine

The museum displays an early H-1C (inboard) H-1 rocket engine, prior to the addition of the partial aspirators, when the turbopump exhaust was still dumped overboard on the side of the boattail. A hand-written inscription on the LOX turbopump indicates that this is engine H-2009 (Rocketdyne's serial number, corresponding to MSFC serial number H-1075), which Alan Lawrie tells me was originally installed in S-I-6, the first stage of the SA-6 launch vehicle.

The engine is fairly complete, with a solid-propellant gas generator (SPGG) and many of its closures installed. The fuel additive blender unit (FABU) has its heater assembly installed.

The gallery in which the engine is located is well-lit, but unfortunately via many small spot lighting units. This means that there's a light either shining directly into the lens or providing heavy backlighting, making supplemental lighting a necessity.

I have a number of H-1-related resources.

This engine is Smithsonian catalog #A19700258000.

As of now, I have not yet sorted through all of my pictures of this H-1 engine, but some other page references this location. Thus, this is a "place holder" version right now, with only the pictures actually referenced. Come back some time later to see if I've finished up, or drop me an email to request me to prioritize the rest of these pictures.
